The new WestpacTrust Stadium is a striking landmark sited on Wellington’s old rail yards. Described as a ‘contemporary colosseum’, it has a seating capacity of 34,500. It is a large building but because of the design there is a high degree of intimacy and intensity for spectators and players - everyone feels part of the action. The location - 300 metres from the railway station and a short stroll from the city centre, means easy access for the public.

Elements such as the aerodynamic roof and the external metal skin were rigorously refined by the architects, Warren & Mahoney and Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture, to create a powerful architectural landmark for Wellington.

Pacific Coilcoaters was involved with this project from the beginning and was able to assist the design engineers with valuable technical information on the external cladding prior to resource consent. The recommendation was for a cladding system that was in line with international specification for highly durable and environmentally sound materials with low nominal gloss and low reflectivity.

Approximately 14,000 square metres of ColorCote® ZRX™ Metallic Silver cladding was used for the external skin of the stadium. The profile is Dimond Roofing LT7, and the cladding was fixed by Aquaheat Industries.

ColorCote® ZRX™ is ideal for the marine and industrial environment close to the harbour. The exterior coat of ColorCote® ZRX™ is a PVF2 paint system which provides excellent colour and gloss retention.

The cladding is exposed on the inside facing the concourse, which circles the stadium. The specification called for this surface to be painted Gull Grey to provide lightness. Painting double sided metal products, either the same or different colours, is a specialty of Pacific Coilcoaters.
